Ninsei, Kenzan and Crafts of Kyoto - Utensils of Elegance

Idemitsu Museum of Arts

Artists

Ninsei Nonomura, Kenzan Ogata
Kyoyaki ceramics flourished in Edo-period Kyoto. Known for his use of brilliant colors, ceramic artist Nonomura Ninsei led the development of the Omuroyaki style featuring colors and designs found on lacquer and folding-screen paintings. Ninsei also created simple glazed and rusted ceramics loved by Kyoto’s nobility. Ninsei’s student Ogata Kenzan inscribed his works with waka and Chinese poetry. The card game-like, communicative style of Kenzan’s square dishes painted with waka powerfully evokes Kyoto traditions. Please enjoy 130 masterpieces by Ninsei and Kenzan showcasing the beauty of Kyoto ceramics.
