Tohoku Okazari - Sacred Paper Decorations

Tama Art University Museum
Finished
There is a rich culture surrounding the worship of the gods through the workings of paper in Japan, with a long history of paper decorations offered to the gods at festivals, shrines and the home. Amongst these can be found the particularly complex and extravagant 3D cutouts of the Tohoku new years paper decorations. Rather decorating large-scale shrines these works of art are said to be passed down in the decoration of small shrines and houses along the road of pilgrimage to the three Mountains of Dewa in Yamagata prefecture. This exhibition features a range of exquisite paper cut outs collected from around Tohoku by Souji Chiba along with examples of dolls, toys, local crafts and old textiles and photographs of local culture and lifestyles by Takao Ohya.
