Makiko Satake
The vivid colors of Makiko Satake’s works are what first catch the eye, as she packs many colors into single lines on the canvas. Looking closely, we see that these lines are not painted but carved multilayer cross-sections of color. She covers the entire bases of her carved works with overlapping layers of paint applied one by one in a unique process.

Satake, who was born in Miyagi Prefecture, creates works based on personal memories and experiences including the Great East Japan Earthquake that seem to move back and forth between the present and the past. She uses lively colors not simply to mask sadness, but to instill viewers with hope for the future and the determination to move forward through figures that refuse to look away or give up. She is expanding her artistic practice from painting into sculpture. Her installation art making use of the entire exhibition space is on display.
