Kazumi Nakamura
After studying art theory and history at Tokyo University of the Arts Kazumi Nakamura set out on the path of an art scholar, but when his painting work was witnessed by professor Koji Enokura he was encouraged to take on the career of an artist. As he came to pursue this calling he quickly gained acclaim as one of the leading figures of Japanese abstract painting. After a flourshing period he came to enter a certain withdrawal from the art world, but returned with a bang with his large scale retrospective held at the National Art Center, Tokyo. This exhibition provides another opportunity to reexamine Nakamura’s contribution to Japanese contemporary art in a selection of abstract paintings chosen by the artist itself.
