This exhibition features a portrait of Hasekura Tsunenaga (b. 1613) in the court of Pope Paul V in Rome. Portraits of Europeans in Japan, a map of the world, and a work recounting Hasekura’s trip across the Pacific Ocean to Mexico and beyond are also on display. These works are examples of Nanban Art, a Japanese style that flourished with influences from European culture. This exhibition aims to present aspects of cultural exchange between Japan and Europe four centuries ago.
