The Bikini Atoll Incident - 60 Years On Daigo Fukuryu Maru/Gozilla 1954-2014

Maruki Gallery for the Hiroshima Panels
Finished
2014 marks 60 years since the Bikini Atoll Incident in which a Japanese fishing boat Daigo Fukuryu Maru was caught in the fallout of American nuclear tests in the Bikini Atoll. This terrible accident is testament against nuclear bombs and has had a lasting affect upon Japanese culture, as represented in such iconic films as Gozilla. With the further devastating events at the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant on 11th March 2011, we are further brought to ask ourselves how we might face the future and learn from this past. This exhibition presents us with such questions through the anti-nuclear posters of Kiyoshi Awazu, the illustrations of Daigo Fukuryu Maru and Fukushima from Seitaro Kuroda and the Gozilla themed work of Hideyuki Nagasawa.
