Chic Gentlemen and Elegant Ladies: Fashion in Japanese Painting

Yamatane Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Terukata Ikeda, Yukihiko Yasuda, Tadashi Moriya, Shoen Uemura, Kiyokata Kaburaki, Shinsui Ito et al.
This exhibition introduces well-dressed, stylish men and women of many periods, from the chic ensembles depicted in Edo-period paintings and ukiyo-e to the modish attire depicted in modern and contemporary nihonga and Western-style paintings. Kokei Kobayashi ‘s elegant Minamoto no Itaru in Heian dress, the creatively adorned generals of Yukihiko Yasuda ‘s and Seison Maeda’s, the fully costumed actors of Sharaku Toshusai and Toyokuni Utagawa, the chic casual dressing of Terukata Ikeda’s Edokko: the guises adopted by the cool men at the forefront of fashion in every period provide strong stimuli to us today.
Stylish men could not, of course, outdo the ladies. The gorgeous Western clothing worn by Michiyo Kogure, an actress portrayed by Shinsui Ito, the elegant Japanese clothing worn by Kiyokata Kaburaki’s charming ladies and Shoen Uemura’s immaculate young women, the smart costumes that the Western-style artists Sotaro Yasui and Takeshi Hayashi depicted: in all these works, the artists utilize not only facial expressions but also accessories, hairstyles, and color combinations to depict their subjects’ individuality and charm most skillfully. Here visitors are invited to savor the artists’ aesthetics, perhaps pick up some tips on dressing style, and enjoy the fashion sense alive in each of these paintings and prints.
