In a thematic continuation of Nanami Shibata’s exhibition at Takashi Somemiya Gallery last year, she presents more works related to the theater. This time, however, her paintings shine a spotlight on characters. These dark, curiously unnerving figures are enveloped by energy-infusing balances of color. With thick applications of paint and long brush strokes, these surrealistic images are bewitching, yet their colors, compositions, and brushwork are merely elements on the canvas pursuing the question of the extent to which a painting can be brought to life. This time, her works feature a new approach of adding pencil drawings as she explores how media influences form.
