The first government organized exhibition in Japan took place in 1907 under the title of ”Bunten” (later to be known as Teiten and Shinbunten), setting a precedent for nationally organized open call exhibitions. Within the early 20th century there became a movement of such exhibitions across East Asia with expositions in Seoul between 1922-1944, Taipei 1927-1943 and Changchun between 1938-1944. This movement provided a new platform for artists of each region and came to lay the foundations for the birth of various new art expressions. This exhibition trails the history of the nationally organized open call exhibition with 129 works from 93 artists with a unique chance to reflect upon the development of modern art across East Asia.
