Mark Salvatus
Mark Salvatus displays works inspired by the Dan Brown novel “Inferno,” published in the U.S. in 2013. While the book depicts Manila as “the gateway to hell,” here Salvatus presents a variety of “gates” as entry points to Manila, where he has lived for more than 20 years. These works portray the Philippine capital from the perspective of the artist, but also resonate with those living in Japan, touching upon the positions of three nations: the U.S. (a former colonial power, where the novel was published), the Philippines (a former colony, where the novel is set), and Japan. It is not difficult to find significance in the holding of this exhibition confronting critical social issues in Tokyo.
