Tomoko Sawada
Tomoko Sawada’s self-portrait photography began in 1998 with an official I.D photo. Her works explore themes of the internal and the external, how people’s identities are composed within social frameworks and cultures, and how these factors influence each other. Her new “Facial Signature” series, an extension of her self-portrait project, is based on experiments she did while living in New York. “I want to know what and where people look to determine who they are, so I changed my appearance to look like several different East Asian people.” Three hundred of her self-portraits are on display.
