Speed Taro and Pre-war Children’s Manga

Since the pre-war age the theme of “adventure” has played an important role within narrative manga of Japan. “Speed Taro” was a manga featured in a popular newspaper between 1930-1934, with young adventurers stealing through snow covered mountains and uncertain seas in a constant fight against the enemy. As one of the leading works of Sako Shishido this manga caught the eye of many with its both story line and novel framing. This exhibition features original illustrations from the “Speed Taro” series, which placing these in the context of Shishido’s career and children’s manga of the era.
