Robert Frank
The close exchange between Robert Frank and Kazuhiko Motomura first began when Motomura visited Frank’s house in New York through the introduction of Eugene Smith in 1970. Having received scathing criticism for his published work “The Americans”, Frank at the time was taking a step back from photography and beginning to move into film. Suddenly approached by Motomura he agreed to create a photo collection in Japan and in 1972 released “The Lines of My Hand” with the publishing company Yugensha. This came to form a strong bond between the two and led to the later publication of “Flower is” in 1987. The appeal of Motomura to produce a new photo collection was pivotal in Frank’s return to the medium of photography and it may be fair to say that without Motomura’s instigation Frank would not be the photographer he is recognized to be today. This exhibition celebrates this special relationship between these two figures with a rare coleection of 50 monochrome photographic prints.
