Mari Fukutome
The fourteenth session of “Trance / Entrance,” an experimental performance series taking place at the entrance to the Setagaya Art Museum, presents a solo by Mari Fukutome, a dancer with subtle movements and a clear presence. In an organic and complex dialogue with the museum’s curved, vaulted ceiling and marble staircase extending to the second floor, Fukutome gives another performance full of a sense of adventure, which she choreographed after walking through the Setagaya Art Museum and its surrounding park. The dance is inspired by things from far away and long ago, such as the ceremonial Kinuta Burial Mound in a corner of the park and African art from an exhibition catalogue in the museum’s library. In this vibrant performance drawing on the rich metaphors of sleeping and awakening, the body assumes a variety of forms through clandestine encounters with objects and space.
