The Dharma Gate of Beauty - The Aesthetics of Soetsu Yanagi

Japan Folk-Craft Museum
Finished

Artists

Soetsu Yanagi et al.
The first director of the Japan Folk-Craft Museum, Soetsu Yanagi, had a deep appreciation for the simple implements of everyday life used by ordinary people and gave the name “Mingei” to the folk crafts produced by anonymous crafts people. In 1948 he penned his own book “Bi no Houmon”(The Dharma Gate of Beauty) gaining inspiration from the ‘Infinite Life Sutra’, primary text of Pure Land Buddhism. Within this book he came to ask the life-long question of why such infinite beauty might come from the hands of unknown craftspeople. This exhibition presents a select choice of his associated collection of Buddhist related craft along with his original writings.
