What is the Yokai Inujima Project?
Using the black sands of Inujima to create fictional creatures, this project uses dolls as communication tools to bring people to the island and reflect upon ideas surrounding its roots and heritage.

At first glance, the yokai creatures seem to merely be stuffed dolls with both a precious and eerie look about them. As an art project that began with the artist Yoko Ishii’s sincere interest in the small island, what sets these dolls apart from others is that they are not only collectibles, but also meant to repeatedly bring the owner back to Inujima, whether physically or in spirit. These creatures are vessels that pass down the memory and history of Inujima. Over the Border gallery hopes visitors will also find a connection to Inujima that will resonate as a feeling of home.
