Kazuo Kitai
In 1972 Kazuo Kitai made his first trip to Beijing, a city his mother had described to him as like a dream. He did not return until the early 1990s, when he witnessed the city’s transformation into a megapolis amid dizzying economic growth. Why did he choose to go back then, when no one was looking back on the old Beijing he once knew? A perhaps simplistic explanation is that he wanted to take as a photographic subject the Beijing undergoing this rapid expansion in the years immediately after Tiananmen. These images of walls covered in graffiti, street vendors, and room interiors capture the “unremarkable” small pieces of history that ordinary life comprises. These historical fragments vanished soon after Kitai preserved them on film, bulldozed over and lifted up on a crane to oblivion.
