Artists

Mitsumasa Anno
Mitsumasa Anno has long pursued creative activities in a range of genres as a painter, author of picture books, and book designer. He is especially known for his landscape paintings from his research travels in and outside of Japan. Since first visiting Europe in 1963, Anno has painted landscapes that remained in his mind from his travels around the world. The paintings with faint watercolor over softly drawn pencil lines evoke the quiet emotions of the traveler. Anno also paints landscapes full of imagination and playfulness, as seen in his “Journey” series featuring finely depicted panorama landscapes.
This exhibition introduces Anno’s landscapes with a focus on his European landscapes from the collection of the Anno Art Museum in the painter’s hometown of Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture. Around 100 original watercolor works will be on display, including landscapes based on the sketches made at his travel destinations that expressively illustrate the emotions of the traveler, as well as creative landscapes painted for his picture books. Enjoy a tour of Europe by entering the world of Mitsumasa Anno’s “travel and landscapes.
