In this show, Lotte Lyon presents new sculptures and a new series of drawings. In recent years Lyon has been creating a series on the walls of exhibition spaces. Although these works were painted, she prefers to view them as wall drawings. They relate directly to the sizes of the walls, and like her previous work, ask questions about size, relation, and the use of spaces.

Lyon, who recently began building objects again, will show seven of these pieces at the gallery. These partially painted plywood creations are somewhat smaller than previous works at about 50 cm in height. Their size gives them a feeling quite different from earlier, larger works, almost like pieces of furniture. Displaying them as a set gives the impression of a flock or herd, and Lyon likes to see them as a group of small beings. Some have patterns, referring to her previous wall art, while others have hinges so they might be changed or used in varying ways. The artist is still pursuing ideas of variation and imbalance with these objects.

Lyon’s drawings are made from pencil and colored pencil on paper. This new series has a larger format than previous drawings, and no longer depict only one object on each sheet, but two or three. This new approach enhances her ability to show what interests her in her sculptural work– explorations of transformation and change.
