Darren Johnston
British choreographer and multi-disciplinary artist Darren Johnston embarked on a residency in Kochi, Japan in 2013, to research concepts of zero point, delving into sacred ceremonial spaces, ancient rituals and Eastern thinking on rebirth. After a further research period and presentation at the Barbican Theatre in London his project went into final production this year, created over three months in Tokyo. Terrada warehouse was used as both a production facility and inspiration for the design and staging of the work. The final piece was presented this year at The Museum of Art, Kochi.
Zero Point creates a unique space where visual art, music and dance collide. Featuring an original music score by seminal composer Tim Hecker.
This exhibition focuses on artwork, imagery, sound and video from the projects evolution over the last 3 years. From the artist’s initial embarkment on the Shikoku Ohenro pilgrimage, to his fascination with sacred ceremonial spaces and their reinterpretation through digital technology.
The project was co-commissioned by Barbican, The Museum of Art, Kochi and Perth International Festival.
