Kisei Kobayashi “Tradition/Disappearance”

Ginza Nikon Salon (Nikon Plaza)
Finished

Artists

Kisei Kobayashi
Kisei Kobayashi’s photography captures the landscapes and architectures formed by the legacy of ancient religions and civilizations. Here he features works produced across India, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong and East Timor. Whilst Buddhism was first born in India, it came to decay in the 5th century, finally losing out to the strength of Islam. The Islamic dynasty in India was also much revered during the middle ages but later came to die out. In Thailand Theravada Buddhism came to prominence in the 13th century, but many temples were destroyed in war with Myanmar. In Bali indigenous beliefs were fused with Hinduism and in East Timor its citizens were devoted Christians, one factor leading to its separation from Indonesia. Here Kobayashi traces these languishing memories and the complexities of human desire and belief through their imprint upon the land.
