Yozo Hamaguchi
In this autumn, an exhibition of copper-plate prints and “words” is held.
The motifs of copper-plate prints of Yozo Hamaguchi are familiar still lifes, such as cherries or woolen yarn, etc., and at the latter part of 20th century, his works became highly evaluated in many countries including France. Casual, quiet and deep appearance of his works impress us widely beyond the difference of language and culture.
The “words” introduced together with the works of Hamaguchi at this exhibition are in many forms, such as poem, tanka, haiku, rakugo (comic story), or densho-asobi (traditional games). The expression of the works of Hamaguchi change by the “words”, in such a way that the works sparkle brightly with the “words”, or motifs start muttering, which is the highlight of this exhibition.
Needless to say, prints are not the illustrations of the “words”, and “words” are not the explanations of the prints. The lineup of this exhibition is introductory, aiming that each independent space of the art works is echoing each other and stimulate the imagination of the viewer, and each pieces further becomes alive in the mind of the people in the present age. Please enjoy the world created by the prints and “words” to your heart’s content. What kind of “words” do you wish to attach to the prints yourself? When looking at the works, it is recommended to imagine your own exhibition space with your own selection of “words”.
Approximately 50 copper-plate prints and 30 “words” are exhibited, selected with full playful mind by Ms. Yuriko Kanai, an editor who has worked with many poets.
