This is the second show of Kiyoshi Tatsukawa at Poetic Scape since “Quau in Photo” in 2015.
In the late 1980s, Nobuhiko Kitamura, designer of Hysteric Glamour, met a photographer Kiyoshi Tatsukawa who was very active in fashion photography. The plan they made for the shooting of the 1988-89 season was quite challenging, using an 8x10 camera, no professional models, and street shooting without permission. “The budget was small anyway, but more importantly we wanted to use kids with strong characteristics” (Kitamura). They looked for the unique young people at live houses and nightclubs and invited them to be fashion models. Among those “kids” was artist Mariko Mori and musician Gota Yashiki, who became widely known to the public a couple of years later.
The shooting sometimes involved people on the street, and the images were finally printed on huge, rough paper and handed out to the public. This project became an important trigger for him to move forward to publish the series of photo books “Hysteric” in 1991. Eight photographic prints, video footage of the actual photo shooting, and the original handouts made in 1988 will be shown at the gallery.
