Art Nouveau, a decorative style that flourished in Europe and America in the late-19th and early 20th centuries and left its mark on everything from crafts to architecture and graphic art, is characterized by its flowing lines. This trend can also be seen in the pottery designs of the time, demonstrated by a succession of beautifully elegant Eastern and Western ceramics, a style made possible with a new technique involving underglaze coloring that created multicolor patterns underneath a transparent glaze.
This exhibition presenting several works from some of the most famous kilns in Europe is the most comprehensive showcase of Art Nouveau ceramics in Japan. Centered on works from the Paris Exposition of 1889 and 1990, displays include color underglazed works from Porcelaines des Sèvres, Royal Copenhagen, and Meissen, as well as painted and crystal-glazed decorative ceramics, works with ties to Japan, lithographs, sketches, and documents. See the diverse forms of Art Nouveau in these 200 displays.
