Koichiro Takagi’s depictions of animals have unsettling undertones hinting at the tendencies of these “kemono” (beasts) to lure, deceive, and attack humans in fables and legends. So too people in today’s society have the capacity to transform into beasts, attacking each other’s complex and diverse viewpoints and sometimes even lives. In this sense Takagi’s animals may be interpreted as “humans” in camouflage. His work gives us the opportunity reexamine the circumstances we find ourselves in.
