Artists

Tsuyoshi Shima

Tsuyoshi Shima is an artist that works with varied materials; his “Firework” series (1987) is comprised of concrete set in charred wooden molds, his “Container for the Spirit of a Tree” (1996) in a monument in bronze, and for his large scale ceramic series “Fallen Tree Renewal” and “Stump Renewal” (1998), he mimicked the texture of bark in clay. In 2003 Shima travelled to the distant Japanese island of Yakushima to train for a year, and since then has been working with a variety of materials, including kaolin, a soft, white clay which he melted down to create his “0 Point” series (2012).
This exhibition will include a selection of new works from Shima’s “Core Sample Work” series, including “Former Sea,” comprised of melted down recycling bins, and “Cloudiness.”
