Realism and the Real: Yuichi Takahashi, Ryusei Kishida, and their Contemporaries

Ashikaga Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Yuichi Takahashi, Ryusei Kishida, Yoshio Yoshimura, Rinjiro Hasegawa et al.
The gradual rise of Western-style painting in the Edo Period (1603–1868) and thereafter had significant impact on the people of the era due to its scientific realism, which differed greatly from the aesthetic of traditional Japanese-style paintings. Yuichi Takahashi and Ryusei Kishida were both artists that wanted to emphasize spirituality and use realism to express the inner worlds as well as the exterior world. In later years, however, as tastes changed with the times realist paintings began to recede from view. Just a small number of painters have continued to focus their efforts on realism, concentrating on expanding their own worldviews. Though many of them have remained out of favor, their faithful approach to their subjects and deep spirituality is highly appealing, and in recent years their detailed works have begun to draw attention once again. This exhibition will examine how the 150-year old tradition of realism has changed, and what has remained consistent, examining what is unique about Japanese realism.
