Artists

Kosuke Ichikawa
Artist Kosuke Ichikawa uses more than 60 different types of incense sticks, which vary in burning temperature, size and thickness, to create his artworks by freely burning into paper. Coined “incense painting,” this approach to contemporary painting that takes the genre in a completely new direction has received much media attention. The monochrome gradation, countless holes and smokey marks left behind by the incense relate memories of the artist, drawn out with an intensity that leaves the bold works looking as though they may disintegrate if touched. This solo exhibition, Ichikawa’s first in three years, is a follow up to his 2010 show “Murmur.” The new collages and paintings presented here are based on scenery Ichikawa observed as a young boy searching for ancient castles in the forest.
