Artists

Haruo Dazai
Haruo Dazai (1907–1944) developed new lacquer techniques and brought the medium into the field of art with his numerous lacquer paintings, introducing a new wave of creativity into Japan’s art scene during the Showa era as he broke down boundaries between art and craft. Unfortunately, Dazai passed away during WWII and today he is largely unknown. In 2015 his family left more than 100 items including artworks and materials about his life to the Nerima Art Museum. Through these displays, this exhibition explores the life and work of Haruo Dazai.
