David Stanley Hewett
David Stanley Hewett first set foot on Japanese soil in 1988. His love for Japanese arts and culture motivated him to study Japanese ceramics, traditional Japanese paintings, and, most notably, byobu design: the technique for making traditional Japanese folding screens. This art is rarely practiced anymore as most screens are now made with modern tools and materials.

As a former US Marine and long–time practitioner of Japanese Karate, Hewett has always been fascinated with the material history and culture of Japan. Both the samurai code of Bushido and Shinto religion have played significant roles in influencing Hewett’s work over the past decade. Hewett began painting his now famous Bushido series in 2004 using Kanazawa gold leaf together with acrylic paint on canvas. The Bushido series combines traditional and modern materials to express Hewett’s interpretation of the Samurai code of Bushido through abstract painting.
Hewett’s gold, black and deep reds are reminiscent of a Japanese Shinto shrine, his works being simultaneously bold and calming as a result. It is often remarked that while they appear to be simple, his works continue to evolve, revealing over time a complexity and depth not apparent at first sight.
