Yoshihiko Ito
Yoshihiko Ito was born in 1951. After graduating from Tokyo College of Photography in 1977, he turned to using photography to express abstract concepts such as time and consciousness. Since his career as an artist began in 1980, Ito has produced a large and philosophical body of work rooted in scrupulous observation. In his unique “Contact Print” series, he chronologically arranged prints made using a half-frame camera to reveal a pattern. In his “Shadow” series he then built upon this concept by incorporating elements in each frame that come together to form an image when viewed as a contact sheet. For “To Observe” and “To Continue to Observe,” he employed the same methodology to studies of water drops, leaves, waves, clouds and other objects to explore the often unpredictable relationship between photographer and subject, while also expressing intangible concepts like time and thought within his images. Inspired by the extraordinary representation of time and space seen in Japanese emaki scrolls, Ito moved away from contact sheets in the mid-1990s and began splicing images together into ‘pictorial scrolls’ for his ongoing “Patrone” series. After taking several photographs from a fixed point of view, he tears the prints apart to reconstruct them as mosaic images.
This exhibition will presents the culmination of Ito’s “Patrone” series thus far. Notice how enshrined dolls, raindrops and unassuming animals have been subjected to the same level of scrutiny as employed in series such as “To Observe” and “To Continue to Observe,” see how Ito’s scroll method presents a unique look into the otherwise invisible ebb and flow of time and consciousness.
