Hokusai Katsushika, Henri Riviele
Hokusai Katsushika is a master of Ukiyo-e who was active in the late Edo Period (1603-1868), alongside contemporaries such as Hiroshige, Utamaro, and Sharaku. It would be fair to say that every person in Japan is familiar with his depictions of a red Mount Fuji and a Mount Fuji surrounded by waves, these works greatly popular even among audiences now. This exhibition will offer an overview of Hokusai’s oeuvre, presenting around 50 works, including masterpieces such as “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” and the series “53 Stations of the Tokaido,” as well as yokai paintings of folkloric monsters and spirits, and caricatures. In addition, the “Hokusai Manga” that help popularize this artist abroad, especially in Europe, will be exhibited together with French artist Henri Riviele’s “Thirty-six Views of the Eiffel Tower,” which is said to have been strongly influenced by Hokusai. Discover for yourself why exactly Hokusai is so popular!
