Eleven cutting-edge contemporary artists explore the city’s “wealth of provisions” in relation to architecture, engineering, natural disasters, and the Olympics. Curator and participating artist Yuta Akiyama is involved with the Barrackout project centered around a Koto Ward house to be demolished. In this exhibition he again seeks out overlaps between the present and memories of the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and the Tokyo airstrikes by reimagining the space as a barrack. He also presents a new installment of his “Jizodo Shufuku” (restored Buddhist sanctuary) originally presented in Fukushima.
