Meiji 150: Western-Style Paintings of the Meiji Era

Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Takeshiro Kanokogi, Yoshinobu Tokugawa et al.
2017 marks 150 years since the first year of the Meiji period, which spanned from 1868 to 1912. If we were to count forward from 1868 to the present day, the current Japanese calendar year would be Meiji 150. The era commonly known as the Meiji Restoration brought about many fundamental changes in all areas of peoples daily lives, through significant developments in politics, economics, international relations, science and technology. Art and culture were no exception. This exhibition focuses on introducing Meiji era works of western-style painting from the museum collection. Though the museum is home to many later Taisho and Showa period paintings of this kind, it has a great selection of unique western-style works from the Meiji years.
