The Flowers of Ogai Mori’s Garden, and Tomitaro Makino’s Illustrated Flora

Artists

Ogai Mori, Tomitaro Makino
The original manuscript for Ogai Mori’s work entitled “Hanagoyomi (Flower Calendar)” is held at the Mori Ogai Memorial Museum. In this text, Mori notes the flowering of various plants from February through to September. Although it is not known when the work was written, it is assumed that he penned it in the late 1890s based on observations of the garden in his own residence. Mori’s enthusiasm for flowers and gardening is evident in his diary entries and children’s essays. His work covers more than 500 types of flowers, an extraordinary number for someone who was not a professional plant specialist. Some of the flowers written about faithfully convey a sense of the seasons, while others seem to express more the nature of the author’s thoughts.

This exhibition will introduce plants that were blooming in Mori’s garden as well as flowers that appeared in “Hanagoyomi (Flower Calendar)” together with those featured in the work of Tomitaro Makino, a botanist born in 1862, the same year as Mori. Makino, who recorded the appearance of the flora through precise illustrations, appears in the diaries of Mori, as does Mori in Makino’s.
