Takeshi Ogasawara’s film “Passing Through the Shrine’s Gate” is about a girl from New York who goes on a journey with her Japanese grandpa visiting shrines around Japan. One of the key figures that repeatedly comes up in this film is Kumagusu Minakata, an author, biologist and naturalist who was outspoken in his protest against shrine consolidation. This event will commemorate 150 years since Minakata’s birth with a screening of the film and talk by Seiko Ito and Yoshiya Tamura to follow.
