This gallery has continued to introduce the creative activities of artist Jiro Takamatsu each year since his death. This year, his work will be introduced in context of the activities of Hi-Red Center, an art group in which he participated while continuing his own private practice.

The name of the group - “High Red Center” - was arrived at by combining the Chinese characters that appeared at the start of each of the founding members’ surnames: “high,” “red,” “center.” The group was formed formally in May 1963, though their activities can be said to have started with “Yamanote Line Festival,” what was staged in December the previous year. Though the group was short lived, it succeeded in carrying out numerous events before disbanding after just two years in 1964, their actions including “The 6th Mixer Plan,” “The Great Panorama Show” and “Dropping Event.” Such activities were often staged in public places and were discussed not only in art journalism of the time, but also in newspapers and general interest magazines. Through their guerilla-style events and actions, the group challenged institutions and asked whether what they were doing could be understood as art or not, also reconsidering the relationship between the artist and the audience.
This exhibition will be presented in two parts. An array of photo documentation will be presented in part one (June 23 - July 13). Part two (July 15 - August 5) will then introduce works by Takamatsu, Genpei Akasegawa and Natsuyuki Nakanishi.
