Seitei Watanabe
Seitei Watanabe, a student of Yosai Kikuchi, was an artist who looked up to the painter and lacquerer Zeshin Shibata. Watanabe blended together the sophisticated aesthetics of the Edo period with Western sensibilities to create a unique style that produced stunning compositions using precise brush strokes. He set a particularly high standard when it came to bird-and-flower paintings. When he traveled to France for the first time in 1978 he made direct connections with the West, influencing Impressionist painters such as Degas and Manet. After returning home to Japan, he produced “Kacho no aida (Between flowers and birds),” which remains at Akasaka Palace State Guest House to this day. It depicted the cloisonné without wires technique engineered by cloisonné artist Namikawa Sosuke. In recent years Watanabe has become popular among researchers reevaluating his work. This exhibition will present around 30 works by the Watanabe.
