“Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji” is a series of landscape prints that depict Mount Fuji from various locations in Japan. Despite the number “36” in the title, the series actually consists of “46” works, since 10 works were added later following successful sales and popular demand. The complete 46 works, owned by Ota Memorial Museum of Art, will be exhibited here for the first time since 2010.
The series is full of unconventional, original and striking ideas, as seen in fine works like “Mild Breeze on a Fine Day” and “Great Wave off the Coast of Kanagawa.” This is perhaps down to the enlightenment that Hokusai reached after turning 70, after his persistent devotion to the art of ukiyo-e. Here you can decipher Hokusai‘s innovative ideas hidden in “Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji.“
Meanwhile, Hokusai‘s daughter, Oei, emerged as a revered ukiyo-e artist, known by her artist name Oi. Oi’s skillful paintings of beautiful women were highly praised at the time, and some even said that her works surpassed those of her father. She was also known for her eccentric character, and in recent years historical novels and a TV drama have been written, taking her as a heroine. This exhibition will showcase “Courtesans Showing Themselves to the Strollers through the Grille,” one of Oi’s masterpieces that will be on display here for the first time in two years.
