Eisei-Bunko Museum founder Moritatsu Hosokawa (1883–1970) was a renowned collector and supporter of Japanese modern art. He was quick to identify and promote the talents of Nihonga painters of his day, such as Taikan Yokoyama, Kanzan Shimomura, and Shunso Hishida. He also formed close ties with Western-style painters including Ryuzaburo Umehara and Sotaro Yasui, and there are many letters from these artists addressed to Hosokawa. Hosokawa’s collection was built through relationships with these artists, and several of their most important works are featured as key elements of the Eisei-Bunko Museum.

Presenting rarely exhibited major works such as Hyakusui Hirafuku’s “Yojo” and Eikyu Matsuoka’s “Murogimi,” Taikan Yokoyama’s cedar door painting “Kusabana-zu” created especially for the Hosokawa home and other works produced through Hosokawa’s relationships with artists, as well as writings and correspondence between them, this exhibition offers an intimate look at the development of the Eisei-Bunko Museum collection.
