This exhibition of works from the Setagaya Art Museum’s collection of some 16,000 pieces focuses on those created in 1986, the year the museum opened. Presenting these diverse works together offers glimpses into society and art at that time. Snapshot photography by Yutaka Takanashi and Akihiko Hirashima captured scenes of daily life in Tokyo as it transformed rapidly at the beginning of the Bubble Era; 1986 was also the year artists including Genpei Akasegawa and Akinobu Fujimori formed the Roadside Observation Society, bring their unique blend of humor and critical perspective to the city. Meanwhile, the New Painting movement that had been garnering attention since the early 1980s engulfed the global art scene with dramatic brushstrokes and vibrant colors. Such artists represented here include painters Sandro Chia, Tadanori Yokoo, and Shinro Ohtake. There is a special corner of works by aesthete and epicure Rosanjin Kitaoji, the inspiration for the hit 1980s culinary manga “Oishinbo.” Plans and photography for the Setagaya Museum of Art by architect Shozo Uchii are also featured. Take a new look at this park-side museum while reflecting on the year it got its start.
