Artists

Yoko Imoto
This is the first large-scale Yoko Imoto exhibition in Japan, following on from shows hosted in Paris, France and Bologna, Italy in 2015. Imoto creates images by applying color to hari-e pictures made using the traditional Japanese craft of tearing and gluing paper, using these to create picture books loved by people of all generations, parents and children alike. Her original images are full of soft hues that fill the books with noticeable warmth. These are picture books that everyone in Japan has read at least once, comparable to classic fairy tales such as “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Thumbelina,” as well as old Japanese tales like “The Crab and the Monkey” and “Hanasaka Jiisan (The Old Man Who Made the Dead Trees Blossom).” Get a sense of the world of Yoko Imoto with this comprehensive exhibition presenting 314 of her original works, as well as 134 book titles divided across six areas.
