Ryoko Kumakura + Solaya Nagai “Di-Vision/0”

TAV Gallery
Finished

Artists

Ryoko Kumakura, Solaya Nagai
Painter Ryoko Kumakura and sculptor Solaya Nagai work in different media but share similar approaches to outlines and surfaces in their works. Kumakura’s ‘Still Life’ series realistically portrays abstracted subjects like origami and other paper craft with intentional superficiality, rough brush strokes jutting out from contours like overzealous crayon drawings. Nagai’s series ‘metaraction’ combines two sculptural objects such as Shigaraki ceramic tanuki, teddy bears, Barbie dolls, or statues of the Virgin Mary. Simultaneously revealing similarities and disharmonies between two subjects, in her recent works Nagai has integrated photographs as a way of emphasizing contrasts of shape and surface. For this collaborative exhibition Kumakura features Nagai’s sculptures in her paintings.
