Koichiro Wakamatsu
Born in 1914, Koichiro Wakamatsu attended Tokyo Art School and studied under Fujishima Takeji. After the war and a stint in the artistic Ikebura Mont Parnasse area, Wakamatsu returned to his homeland of Fukushima and continued to produce work. Close friends with founder Genichiro Inokuma, from the second exhibition onward, Wakamatsu showed his work at art group Shinseisaku Kyoukai’s exhibition until his death. During the war, Wakamatsu survived the bombing of Hiroshima. This experience would have a lasting impact on his artwork. From the 1960s, he would transition concrete to abstract work, eventually reaching the collages he would become known for. Inspired by the spirit of ’neorealism’, Wakamatsu investigated the connection between life and art, especially with music. This pursuit would be reflected in his artwork throughout his life.
