Tsuguharu Foujita and the Art of Books

Bernard Buffet Museum
Finished
2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of the artist Tsuguharu (Léonard) Foujita. On this occasion, the Bernard Buffet Museum presents an exhibition focused on his illustration work. Having established himself as an artist in France, Foujita not only painted but also undertook a considerable amount of illustrating. The conditions were right as Europe has a long history of illustrating books, which are considered not only documents but also works of art. In the 1920s Foujita produced more than 30 illustrated books, surpassing many other popular artists of the day. Over the course of his lifetime he would take on more than 100 book design projects. On display are examples of his “book work,” including his illustrated books from prewar France, works he published in Japan in the 1930s and 1940s, and his deluxe-edition illustrations from his return to France in the 1950s, as well as postcards, letters, handmade toys, ceramics, and other items he exchanged with friends.
