In Korea, military service is mandatory for males and is a rite of passage that Korean young men must undergo in order to become an adult. Even though socially fulfilling one’s military duty is a given and considered an honor, on an individual level the military experience results in a kind of psychological trauma. They are forced to be apart from their family and loved ones and they must suddenly go through intense physical training in a harsh environment. This military experience is simultaneously the most crucial and most coercive event in the lives of young Korean men.

In the army, soldiers are supplies without personalities. However, they are individuals who have twenty years of personal history and are worthy of respect. Jaegu Kang’s nude photos capture the men as who they are, ordinary young Korean men, and not just as stereotypical soldiers wearing military uniforms and hats.
