Artist Yoshiko Shimada and Hong Kong based Asian Art Archive’s (AAA) Susanna Chung are teaming up to hold AIT Slide Talk #36.

Besides holding exhibitions in Japan and abroad, since 2010 Shimada has been researching the history of the influential art publication Gendai Shincho and its art school Bigakko (1969-75). Bigakko was at the time an alternative art school founded by the Gendai Shincho, a publication known for its radical criticism, and influenced by the 60s student movement.

This year, while visiting Hong Kong as an artist-in-residence at AAA, Shimada learned of another alternative art school that was founded in 1968 around the same time as Bigakko. Shimada will be talking about ideologies of both schools and of the alternative art school scene in Hong Kong.

Chung will talk about AAA and its involvement in the gathering, creating, and sharing of knowledge in the greater Asian art scene.
