Shusui Okakura, Fuho Oka, Shotetsu Takaya, Tenjo Honda are the four disciples of Hogai Kano, the father of modern Nihonga. Not only were these four witnesses to the creation of Hogai’s masterpiece ”Hibo Kannon”, as the first graduating class of the then Tokyo School of Arts (present-day Tokyo University of Arts) they were considered the big four of their generation. This exhibition will showcase the life and work of these four vital disciples of Kano along with the work of Nihonga pioneers such as Taikan Yokoyama, Kanzan Shimomura, and Shunso Hishida.
