Karla Capek: One hundred Years of Translation

2018 marks the 80th year since Karel Capek died on the eve of World War II in December of 1938. A few years after reaching European and American audiences, Capek’s work would be translated in Japan, where they continue to be loved among 21st century Japanese readers to a degree unseen elsewhere. From the Taisho period to now, a surprising number of Capek’s work has and continues to be translated into Japanese.
This exhibit looks back at the almost 100-year history of translations of Capek’s work into Japanese and shines a light on the translators who brought his literature to Japanese readers. By following translations of Capek’s work year-by-year, we learn not only what was published when but how his work was perceived in Japan and how that perception changed over time.
