The Scale of Things: Jerome Bouchard and Mathieu Gaudet

Embassy of Canada Prince Takamado Gallery
Finished

Artists

Jerome Bouchard, Mathieu Gaudet
The works of this exhibition address the question of the scale of things. In particular, the idea of “near and far” is brought out by juxtaposing Japanese and North American cultures and through the materials and techniques used in the artwork on display. The notion of “near and far” is also considered by distorting distances using iconographies of both cultures such as waves, mountains, rocks and so on. In particular, while moving around the exhibition, the viewer’s interpretation regarding the scale of the elements presented in the artwork will be challenged.

Jerome Bouchard lives and works in Canada and in Belgium. He uses geographic data, contour generators, fixed blade knives, digital cutting plotters and micro stencils to create paintings. This exhibition is a result of his residency programs at Tokyo Art and Space in 2017 and at Residence Artist Vivégnis International in Belgium in 2018. Mathieu Gaudet is a painter and sculptor, who lives and works in Montreal. His works unfold their full lines in the manner of plainsong, which could be repeated indefinitely from the beginning to the end and back again.
